The others might be raiding, hunting, forraging, with wagon trains etc.UWS guyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01277557128674527225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-949107149688949585.post-49471096483633918062012-01-10T10:23:25.326-08:002012-01-10T10:23:25.326-08:00Which explains why a village of 1,250-2,500 suppor...Which explains why a village of 1,250-2,500 supports a garrison of 150-300.UWS guyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01277557128674527225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-949107149688949585.post-21669830895838543972012-01-10T10:22:13.091-08:002012-01-10T10:22:13.091-08:00The # encountered should be considered combatants ...The # encountered should be considered combatants as per arneson's FFC this should be only 30% of the actual number. So to include women and children triple all numbers for humanoids (30-300 orcs also include 60-600 females and young), whic raises the population somewhat.

A group of bandits, probably have camp followers and pregnant women with their you who cook and clean for them (and fight as well).UWS guyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01277557128674527225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-949107149688949585.post-69529151364225017742011-01-20T18:21:05.253-08:002011-01-20T18:21:05.253-08:00Just caught this post from a link on Andy Slack...Just caught this post from a link on Andy Slack's blog (http://andyslack.wordpress.com/2011/01/20/the-road-not-taken/). I really like how you parsed this out.

Looking at the setting map in terms of the social groups it supports--and not merely "civilised" areas--does wonders for planning the campaign and putting all those encounters with unsettled men and humanoids in great perspective.

Thanks for the thought exercise--I'll be sure to take this approach for the next campaign I run.Erin Smalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16085303583608172242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-949107149688949585.post-69348925668600730562010-07-15T17:33:07.220-07:002010-07-15T17:33:07.220-07:00Couldn't/Shouldn't almost every castle hav...Couldn't/Shouldn't almost every castle have a village nearby?

If you look at the OA map, most catch basins/ponds have a little deer nearby. If one considers adding in the idea that each little deer is a village, that suggests a few more settlements.

Also, some people use the deer to represent monster lairs. To me, that doesn't make sense if they are in the hex next to a castle...

Just a few things to consider.The_Mythhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10621186404597424842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-949107149688949585.post-76942534399831572742010-07-15T14:19:19.199-07:002010-07-15T14:19:19.199-07:00Excellent research and calculations. :)
